Boston University's Daily Free Press covers Walk For Choice

Bostonians protested Congress’ plan to defund Title X, and thus eliminating funds toward Planned Parenthood, at the steps of City Hall on Saturday during the “Boston Walk For Choice.”

About 50 people held posters that read messages such as, “I Stand with Planned Parenthood,” “Family Planning is Fiscally Responsible” and “Because of Planned Parenthood, I’ve never needed an abortion. Thank you.”

…“We are now given the daunting task of debunking the lies and urging people to see beyond the moral panic anti-choicers are trying to create,” said Stephanie Beal, a College of Arts and Sciences sophomore and organizer, during a speech.

“These are our rights. Religion cannot take them away. Our government should not be taking them away. Our bodies are not public property, they are not incubators…Enough is enough. We don’t have to tolerate anti-choice agendas when we live in a pro-choice country.”

Everyone deserves affordable accessibility to health and reproductive care, Beal said.

Waters, during a speech, gave out Sen. Scott Brown’s phone number and urged people to call him and tell him that they expect him to protect women’s health, to protect women’s reproductive freedom and to vote against H.R. 3 and all other anti-choice measures that come through congress.

“We will not sit down and be quiet while our rights to make our own medical decisions become disposable fodder for conservative politicians to divide our nation further,” Beal said.

"Walk For Choice finds support on Boston Common" - an article on the February 26 walk that I managed to miss

And it’s a really good article!

Walk for Choice is a national movement that took place in several cities across the country on Feb. 26. The Boston chapter, organized by a collection of students and activists, started walking from five widespread locations: Boston University, Copley Square, Brigham Circle, Ringer Park in Allston, and Government Center. Each group converged toward the Boston Common to make the message even louder.

One of the organizers, Moira Rashid, said people traveled from all over New England to participate in the Walk For Choice. But many of the participants came from Emerson College.

Sarah Betancourt, a senior political communication major at Emerson, said she was “psyched” to be there. As an intern at NARAL Pro-Choice, she said she felt a personal duty to be part of the Walk for Choice.

“What’s happening right now in congress is just ridiculous, it’s setting us back 40 years,” Betancourt said. “I just don’t understand why old white men feel like they have the ability to infringe upon our rights.”

Although several of the participants said the recent bills going through congress angered them, the Walk for Choice had a celebratory tone with a unified message attached to the movement.

“We’re being sent the message that our opinions and our voices don’t really matter. We want to send back the message that they do matter and as taxpayers, we should have a say in what happens to our bodies and where our tax dollars are spent,” [organizer Stephanie Beal] said. “We hope this will encourage thousands of women and men, who feel they haven’t been heard in the past to exercise their rights, speak up and be heard.”

People at the Pru! Nice!

Great Article from The Harvard Crimson!

“In Boston, over 1,400 protesters rallied with signs, starting from five locations and converging in Boston Common in front of the statehouse. Harvard College and graduate students, including members of the Radcliffe Union of Students, Harvard Students for Choice, and International Women’s Rights Collective, walked with fellow students and community members to protest the House bills.”
